With the Denver Broncos on a three-game losing streak, many orange-clad fans are drowning their sorrows, according to a recent poll of NFL diehards.
American Centers for Addiction (alcohol.org) surveyed 3,719 professional football fans online, asking them if they drink or less if their favorite team lost on game day.
Broncos fans responded that they were drinking “more” and most said their drink of choice was “local craft beer”.
Overall, local craft beer was NFL fans’ favorite drink on game day, with 28.9% drinking regional foam while watching the game. More than a third, 34.8% of Broncos fans polled in the survey said they drank local craft beer. According to the survey, only 1.2% of Broncos fans drink wine while watching and 7.9% do not consume alcohol.
“Some fans, like those who support the Broncos, tend to drown their sorrows and drink more when their team loses,” said PR Fire in a press release. “On the other hand, fans of teams like the 49ers drink equal amounts whether their team wins or loses. Seattle Seahawks fans tend to drink less when their team loses, perhaps preferring to get home early at home.
Sports aside, it’s imperative that anyone who drinks away from home gets home safely without putting themselves or others at risk — don’t drink or drive, according to alcohol. org.
“According to our survey, 1 in 4 NFL fans will return home after a night of drinking,” alcohol.org said. “Others use either a carpool, a ride from a friend, public transport or just walking/cycling.”
Fans who drink shouldn’t drive, “even if you feel fine,” the survey’s authors said. Alcohol.org provides resources to help people who struggle with alcoholism.
PR Fire recommends non-alcoholic beers and cocktails for fans who want them. Fans who want to say ‘no’ to alcohol on match day are encouraged to do so ‘without fear’.
