One of Charleston’s most popular barbecue restaurants lies north of Mount Pleasant.
The restaurant has three other local locations in downtown Charleston, West Ashley and Sullivan’s Island.
After six years, The Rusty Rudder announced on social media that it was closing its doors in March 2020, leaving the location vacant.
The Home Team BBQ group plans to rehabilitate and rejuvenate the modest wooden building to bring its smoked meats, full restaurant and bar in 2022.
Aaron Siegel, chief operating partner and pitmaster, said the location “feels like a home team for us. We like to rehab an old school, and this place already feels like a fish shack or barbecue shop.
The company worked with a long-time real estate partner Development of the peninsula to find his fourth Lowcountry space. When Rusty Rudder closed, Peninsula purchased the property in 2020.
Within the future Mount Pleasant Home Team, the company says guests can “expect to find the same good vibes, multi-regional BBQ, creative daily specials and extensive bar program that people have learned to to know and to love”.
A large outdoor area will serve as an open-air courtyard at the new location, with plenty of TV screens for game days and space for socializing.
Consistent with other Charleston-area venues, Siegel said the Mount Pleasant Restaurant is expected to hold regular events, including live music, oyster roasts, hog picks and more. The new location will provide a family atmosphere for nearby neighborhoods north of Mount Pleasant – and is also close to Roper St. Francis Hospital.
