EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Facing muddy conditions, on the road, with the season on the line, Mason Wunderlich stepped up in a major way.
The junior quarterback handed Mater Dei a 28-27 win over Linton Stockton to put them in the Section Finals for the 12th consecutive season.
Wunderlich threw for three touchdowns and 306 passing yards Friday to hand the Miners their first loss of the year. It was a clutch performance to keep Mater Dei’s post-season dreams alive, and it’s why he was voted home team MVP of Week 11 on Friday.
“The whole team, we also played well,” said Wunderlich. “I wish there was an MVP for the whole team. I wish we were nominated for that one. Our line worked really well. They gave me a lot of time, and it shows. That’s why when I got the chance, I had to give it to my guys.
Since Wunderlich was handed the keys to quarterback his second year, he’s made tremendous strides in that role. His coach, Mike Goebel, attributes this progress to a lot of work during the offseason. That paid off this season on the way to a 9-2 record.
“He played with confidence, and that’s the key to everything,” Goebel said. “He can throw the ball. We know it. He played the role. »
Wunderlich will look to help Mater Dei win his third straight section title on Friday when the Wildcats host North Posey.
